Expert tapering plans rooted in science-guided by you.
TaperWell uses the principles of neuroadaptation for safe and effective tapering that goes above-and-beyond traditional standards of care.
Hyperbolic Tapering & Neuroadaptation
Our tapering process follows a hyperbolic curve rather than a traditional step down approach. This approach ensures precise step-downs that allows your brain time to re-adapt between dose adjustments.
We know that neuroadaptation takes time-weeks to months even. Our clinicians make it a priority to learn the rate your brain adapts to a reduction in antidepressant dosing-not just what the bell curve predicts.
Because everyone is different, no single taper is alike.
Guided by the science of neuroadaptation our plans follow the latest research and guidelines such as the Maudsley Deprescribing Guidelines, NICE Guidelines and …..

Tapering off antidepressants can be a long and delicate process, particularly for patients who have been on these medications for many years. At TaperClinic, we help patients taper off various types of antidepressants, including:
SSRIs (Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors):
Zoloft (Sertraline)
Lexapro (Escitalopram)
Prozac (Fluoxetine)
Celexa (Citalopram)
Paxil (Paroxetine)
Luvox (Fluvoxamine)
SNRIs (Serotonin-Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors):
Effexor (Venlafaxine)
Cymbalta (Duloxetine)
Pristiq (Desvenlafaxine)
TCAs (Tricyclic Antidepressants):
Amitriptyline (Elavil)
Nortriptyline (Pamelor)
Imipramine (Tofranil)
Doxepin (Sinequan)
Mirtazapine (Remeron)
Trazodone (Desyrel)
Wellbutrin (Bupropion)
At TaperClinic, we tailor the tapering process for antidepressants to minimize withdrawal symptoms, such as “brain zaps,” dizziness, and mood changes. You’ll receive consistent support through virtual consultations and access to an exclusive online community where you can share experiences with others who are also tapering off psychiatric medications. -
Anti-Anxiety medication most often falls in the same class as antidepressants: SSRI, SNRI, TCA and some off-label medications.
When tapering off medication for anxiety, it can be challenging to decide if underlying anxiety is returning, or if it is new withdrawal symptoms. This is where it is beneficial to have a clinician who focuses solely on tapering and can differentiate and minimize these symptoms.

Benzodiazepines are a challenging class of medications to come off because they have a high incidence of withdrawal symptoms. Often times these tapers require very small adjustments over a longer period of time to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms like anxiety, involuntary muscle movements and insomnia.
Here at TaperWell we can prescribe custom compounded medication in both pill and liquid form in order to achieve very small step-downs in order to maximize comfort.

Filling the Gap
Traditional approaches to coming off medications use a linear taper plan, often consisting of halving the doses at standard time intervals. While this can work for some people, there is a group of people who this can cause withdrawal effects that can be damaging or actually dangerous for. Unfortunately, often times these withdrawal symptoms go unrecognized or attributed to relapse, resulting in patients going back on medications or actually ending up on higher doses-exactly the opposite of what they wanted.
Our mission at TaperWell is to bridge this gap.
The larger medical community is now catching up to what a smaller group of us have known for a while-there are many more people who need a very slow, step-down approach in order to avoid severe withdrawal symptoms.
Unfortunately, general practitioners and some psychiatrist are not taught this during medical training. Even when they are, many are too limited by time constraints or lack of insurance reimbursement to fully devote their time and energy to a hyperbolic taper-leaving patients either having to figure it out on their own or try to find another clinician out of network.
This is where TaperWell steps in. Our clinicians focus solely on deprescribing antidepressants and understand that more time is of the essence. We give you the space to go as fast or as slow as you need and listen to what your body is telling us.
